Ingress protection

The IP number consists of 3 digits, but often,

only 2 are used as the third is used to indicate

special conditions. The first digit indicates the

level of protection against solid objects and the

second indicates the level of protection against

water and moisture.

Industrial Housings for CCTV cameras are

typically rated as IP65. Under Home Office

guidelines for surveillance activities, the

Operational Requirement needs to fulfil one

or more of the following purposes:

MONITOR

DETECT

RECOGNISE

IDENTIFY

and the Operational Requirement for:-

a) Monitoring human or vehicle traffic gives

a target size of not less than 5% of the

monitor screen.

b) Detecting target electronically is 10% of the

monitor screen size.

c) Recognition of a “known person” not less

than 50% of the monitor screen.

d) Identification of a person such as to obtain

a picture of evidential quality is not less than

120% of the monitor screen i.e. the face

and body of an adult filling 100% of the

screen barring the lower legs.

Vehicle Recognition

A typical family saloon is 1.5m wide with a

typical vehicle registration number plate 520mm

long. With the full width of a vehicle filling a

CCTV monitor screen, the number plate will

occupy 1/3 of the screen. With a fixed lens

camera, it is unlikely that identification of both

number plate and driver of a vehicle could be

obtained with one camera.
